Back in December 2021, two spectacularly creative beings by the names of Rafi and Klee set a new task for their patrons by way of their Collab Lab challenge and the parameters were as follows:
• The theme is “Minor Course Corrections”.
• If you make a mistake, highlight it and make it a part of the piece you're proud of. No mistakes? Incorporate a deliberate flaw.
• Incorporate gold.
• When finished, add or change something.
Almost three months along and I am so close to the finish line. With my gold leaf in hand, I'm just waiting on my canvas to dry so I can start attacking it with this shiny, unpredictable element.
Now I'm pretty comfortable with knowing when I'm done with a piece so I have no issue with calling it a day but with this task... I need to add something else? (Cue internal scream).
The first time I heard that last parameter, my head went into a bit of a spin. But now I'm here and running down the home stretch and...*shrugs* I'm pretty excited to see what I'll add to it. Maybe it'll just be an extra little smudge of blue, maybe I'll dig a few scratches into the paint or maybe I'll literally throw something at it and hope for the best. My point is that I didn't need to freak out about it, especially at the very start of the project, and as impatient as I am I've actually enjoyed stretching the time I've spent on it over a longer period of time than I'm used to. I've been able to appreciate how it has come together more than I have done with any of my other pieces. Each layer has its own little place in my memory and I love that.
