Somewhere near the end of march I was having a bit of a tidy up, trying to organise my workspace a little better and make some more room for the extra sketchbooks I had been making... and then I noticed just how many canvases I had. Not massive canvasses, they ranged from about A3 to A6 but they were plentiful... as was their hogging of valuable shelf space. And I realised it wasn't just canvases. I've been making my own paper for a good year or so now and it has slowly become a wavering, unsteady colourful Jenga tower of recycled letters and scraps, waiting oh so patiently for me to do something with it. Then I remembered a challenge I have been wanting to do for aaaaaaages. A painting every day for a month. That's a good 30 or so surfaces I could take out of my teetering shelves equation. So, I grabbed a bunch of canvases, some sheets of handmade paper and a few other random boards that had been laying around for who knows how long and started to brainstorm some ideas ready for April.
So how did it go? Pretty well. Oh who am I kidding, it went great. 30 new paintings over 30 days. Sure, they weren't masterpieces but I got to loosen up and do some things I wouldn't usually do which has helped me so much. I played with a few colours I usually, but not actively, avoid. My brush strokes weren't all carefully placed and thought out beforehand AND I got myself back into a comfortable routine of making art everyday which I am beyond happy about. Sure it's not always going to be a painting but a page in my sketchbook or some gesture drawings is more good enough. After all, it all adds to the creative brain bank doesn't it. So, was it worth it? Hell yes. Would I recommend it? I'd recommend a challenge to anyone. Maybe this particular one isn't for everyone but if you come across something that excites you and you want to give it a go then go for it. Even if you fail it, you'll still have learnt something from it and that is absolutely worth it.
Stay creative
